First lets understand what processed meat is.
When all the good edible parts of the animal are removed whats left is a carcass, that carcass is shaken and crushed to give it a nice shape as a salami or sausage.
You could be eating parts of the animal like hooves, skeletons, nails etc which have little to no nutritional value.
Secondly to give this a better shelf life, these meats are treated with chemicals and various types of salts and sugars to take away the nasty smell from them.
Here is a list of all the stuff that goes into it
- beef/pork (The type of meat)
- hydrolyzed vegetable protein (Flavouring to give meat-like flavour)
- salt
- dextrose (A kind of sugar)
- corn syrup (Again sugar)
- hydrolyzed milk protein (Flavouring to give meat-like flavour)
- sodium phosphate ( Salt)
- natural spices
- smoke flavoring
- sodium erythorbate (A chemical salt)
- sodium nitrite. ( A preservative)
All this when consumed on a regular basis changes your body’s physiology and increases the acid load, that in-turn will activate the cancer cells in your body.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies processed meat as Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans), because the IARC has found sufficient evidence that consumption of processed meat by humans causes colorectal cancer.
A 2016 report by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund found that processed meat consumption also increases the risk of stomach cancer.
So there you have it. Stay away from processed meats.
